House Training a Dog

  1. Food and Water
  • Do not leave food and water down all day long.
  • Feed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.
  • Water two or three time a day, with both feeding times and once in between. If the dog stays outside be sure to leave a plenty of water for all day.
  • Leave food down for 15-20 minutes then take it up.
  1. Taking Dog Outside:
  • Take dog outside about 30 minutes after he/she has eaten or drank anything.
  • Also be sure to take the dog outside immediately after he/she wakes up.
  • Get on a set schedule to take the dog outside.
  1. Correcting Dog and Accidents:
  • Keep a water squirt bottle, or a coke can that has been rinsed out and has pennies or rocks in it to make a shaker can, close to you and if the dog goes to make an accident in the room and you see him/her either squirt it with the water or toss the coke can close to it to scare him/her into stopping the accident then take him outside and let him/her go outside then praise for doing so.
  • If the dog has an accident or has had them in the past in you house, you should clean with Natures Miracle or Simple Solution, both of these are enzyme cleaners that will eliminate the smell so that the dog cannot detect it anymore. This will help with keeping the dog from using the same spot because of the smell. Use the directions on the bottle for cleaning.
  1. Be consistent with this training and your dog should be house broken in a few months. It does take some time and smaller dogs take longer than bigger dogs.
